Phil 4:13, “I have strength to do all, through Messiah who empowers me.” (ISR)
How is such a statement possible? In the last entry, I wrote about forgiveness exemplified by Yeshua’s words on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34). I said, “The one who had every right and, not to mention, sovereign power to squash any opposition asks forgiveness for these ones due to their lack of understanding.”
We look in awe at how Yeshua could say what He did from the execution stake, how He could offer such merciful words from a place of utter persecution and torment. We might chalk it up to His divine status. We might assume that the Son of Elohim could do such a thing, but no mere mortal could be expected to react that way. However, we would be wrong. We would be forgetting the example of Stephanos (Stephen), the first disciple of Yeshua to be executed for his faith.
“And they were stoning Stephanos as he was calling and saying, ‘Master Yeshua, receive my spirit.’ And kneeling down he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Master, do not hold this sin against them.’ And having said this, he fell asleep.” –Acts 7:59-60 (ISR)
How could this man say and do what he did? Let us remember that the Scriptures say,
“And they chose Stephanos, a man filled with belief and the Set-apart Spirit (Ruach)” –Acts 6:5b
“Because you are sons, Elohim has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, ‘Abba, Father!’” –Gal 4:6
“For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” –Matt 12:34b
Stephanos had received the Ruach of the Son of Elohim into his heart and bursting forth from this heart came the very words of the Savior. He quite literally followed Yeshua’s example in word and deed. What was important to Yeshua became important to Stephanos. What touched the heart of Yeshua necessarily then touched the heart of Stephanos. He was being conformed to the image of Messiah Yeshua who told His disciples, “with Elohim all things are possible” (Matt 19:26).
Are all things possible? Not in our strength, that’s for sure! But if we have received the Spirit of the Son in our hearts, then it is His power and ability upon which we rely. But we must trust and obey Him in order to lean upon this strength. We must allow the Ruach authority over every aspect of our heart, filling us with His presence so that He can work freely through us. If we do these things then anything is possible. So, what is impossible for you? What is outside your strength? Choose to trust, surrender, and obey. Allow the Ruach access to this area and watch how He fills and strengthens you to do what you never thought possible. Watch how He conforms you to the image of the Son.
